One thing I’m not getting rid of before I leave is my car. My dad convinced me otherwise and I think it’s the right decision. He agreed to take care of my car when I’m gone so it makes it a no-brainer to keep it. This seemed fine but I have run into a few issues. The main issue is that my dad lives in Pennsylvania so I will need to insure my car in there (I currently live in Ohio). The main issue is that I need to have the car insured under my name in Pennsylvania. This seems easy enough. I can just call up my insurance company and change my address.
Well, I’ll also need to register the car in Pennsylvania. My Ohio registration will end on August 1st so it needs to be registered before then. I will no longer be in Ohio at that time and to insure my car in Pennsylvania it needs to registered in Pennsylvania. Sounds easy enough, what do I need to register my car in Pennsylvania? A valid Pennsylvania drivers license. doh!
How do I get a valid PA driver’s license? Well, I need to prove I’m a resident of PA. Ugh, ok, what do I need to show that I’m a resident of Pennsylvania? Two documents that are either tax records, a lease agreement, mortgage documents, W-2 forms, current weapons permit, or current utility bills. Seeing as how I will reside in Ohio until July 25th and want to leave for Mexico City around August 11th I’m not going to have much time to get proof of residency so that I can get a driver’s license so that I can register my car so that I can then insure my car in Pennsylvania. This is going to be a bureaucratic nightmare that will involve some research, a bit of planning and manipulation.
